 The Courageous Uncle

By cleveberry

On July 7th 2010 a light that was dimmed for months quietly went out.  Winston “Georgie” Webber  closed his eyes and left this world. He fought valiantly and courageously refusing to give in, “me nah give up” he repeated at times.

His journey began right here in Port Antonio.  Georgie’s dreams took him to New York, Philadelphia and Finally to Tampa Florida.

Upon meeting George for the first time you were greeted with his big infectious smile that captivated you.   He was quiet, dignified and cool, mostly cool.

He migrated to the United States and became a dental technician. He was smart and gifted and produced dentures that flattered the smile and enhanced the beauty of anyone who wore them.

Using his entrepreneurial skill he opened his own business, first in Philly then moved it to Tampa Florida.

Uncle as he was now called loved his football, a supporter of the Tampa Bay Bucs through thick and thin.

Any chance he got he would return to his native Jamaica to enjoy the beauty of his beloved country.      His visits to Portie were particularly sweet as he was able to stay in hotels and villas that were denied him in his youth.

Life is filled with changing circumstances and in Uncle’s life it was no different. He loved, laughed, got angry and cried at times but in the end his enduring spirit personified his existence in this complex world.

As I looked at Georgie, Coxey, Uncle, Doc’s life, I am reminded that life is a journey with its own process for success and failure, good health and ill health.           It is clear that on this journey some roads are smooth, some have pot holes and some have deep ravines and rocky terrains.       What was clear to Uncle is, no one will leave this world without experiencing some of this process.   Knowing that this road must be traveled he lived his life on his terms.

During his ordeal he fought valiantly to overcome his condition. With the passage of time and the various issues that life imposes surrendering became the right thing to do.

Rest in peace the suffering is no more.
