Attempting to discover the essence of Portland

“I am drinking from the saucer because my cup has overflowed,” I sent this line to a few of my email friends and was amazed by the return emails I received.

I have to admit that because of respect for privacy, all names were put in the Bcc box of my email and, it would appear that I sent it to just the person who received it.  That personal feeling may have conveyed the wrong idea to some and my apologies for that.

Now most of the emails I received suggested that I must have come into some money, while others suggested that I had no problems, and a few congratulated me on my acceptance of Christianity. Thank you all for the good thoughts but none of the above applies.    I am still relatively poor, I have more problems than the average person and I am no more of a Christian than I was before. I just understood that statement as a very positive one that I think could apply to all of us and felt the need to share.

There is a research that I came across that says (1) if we own a computer we are in the top 20% of the people in the world, and (2) if we can send and receive emails then we are in the top 12%. Well isn’t that alone enough for you to think your cup is overflowing?  Just what date, month and year do you project your cup is going to start overflowing? Do you have to have money falling out of your wallets or pocketbooks to get a good feeling about yourself?

Too many of us think that because we haven’t got a big figure balance in our bank account,  we are not living in a big house in an upscale neighborhood with two high priced late model automobiles parked in our garage, we should walk around with an unhappy look on our collective faces and feel like nothing.  Well, You can do that if you want, but I choose to be happy and enjoy the life I have, with what I have, while doing the best I can to make it better.

The big mystery of what came first “the egg or the chicken” still goes unresolved, but there is proof that riches does not always bring you happiness while happiness will always make you feel rich.
